Speaker's Biography:

Rick Reid is a human resources professional with twenty years of experience in a variety of strategic advisory and leadership positions in both public and private sector organizations. Currently the Corporate Learning Consultant with the Executive Education department in the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, Rick has a Bachelor of Commerce from Edwards, holds a CPHR designation, and is a Certified Leadership Coach. In his role with Edwards, Rick develops and facilitates professional development programs with a particular focus on leadership and team development.

Rick’s human resources career has primarily focused in the areas of employee and labour relations, talent acquisition, and employee learning and development. He has extensive experience in conducting workplace investigations, conflict resolution, performance management, and leading complex organizational HR change initiatives. While in leadership positions, Rick has valued opportunities to coach, mentor, and support the growth and professional development of individuals, while working together towards building cohesive, high performing teams. Rick enjoys working with leaders and their teams on the development and execution of their strategic plans, developing strategic human resources programs that help support and drive organizational priorities, facilitating employee training and development activities, and supporting leaders and employees in both creating and working towards their career development goals.

Presentation Overview:

A few years ago, Rick served as the Human Resources Lead on a significant project in the health care sector in British Columbia that involved the opening of two new hospitals in neighboring communities, one month apart. To add to the complexity, one of the hospitals would be staffed entirely by employees of an affiliate hospital who would transfer to the health authority as part of this initiative. This transition required extensive consultation and negotiation with hospital leadership, as well as a diverse employee population represented by multiple unions.

In this presentation, Rick will provide an overview of the project from a human resource and change leadership lens, including reflections on key successes, mistakes made, and lessons learned, while also connecting this experience to leadership theories and best practices taught through Executive Education programming, with a particular focus on the importance of monitoring personal wellness when leading through organizational changes.

Presentation Learning Objective:

  • Review the Six Leadership Styles model including appropriate uses of each style
  • Discuss the importance of maintaining personal wellness and review a wellness model, as well as review the need to monitor the wellness of others during times of significant organizational change
  • Review key factors in employee engagement and labour relations to help successfully drive organizational change projects
