Presentation Topic: Business Model Thinking - From Startup to Strategic Planning

Speaker: Mike Stefaniuk, Director – Business Development (IoT and Digital Transformation), SaskTel

Speaker Biography:   Although he has been at SaskTel for many years, Mike’s career has consistently involved transformation and innovation.  In his current role, Mike is responsible for identifying and implementing new business models, which requires both collaboration with many external stakeholders, and creative thinking.  Context matters, and Mike’s desire to better understand problems to be solved (and the associated opportunity) has helped him identify and push innovation.  With a degree in Commerce from the Edwards School of Business (University of Saskatchewan) and a Master of Public Administration from the Johnson-Shoyama GSPP (University of Regina), Mike has a unique blend of understanding business and public policy environments, which helps him think more holistically when trying to pursue an innovative initiative.

Presentation Overview: The presentation will provide an overview and definition of what a business model is, and how to use this framework in two scenarios: 1. From the perspective of a start-up or new initiative, and 2. From the perspective of an existing business going through a transformation journey.  The approach presented provides a model for working through the uncertainty of implementing a new idea, or transforming an existing business model to respond to external forces.

Presentation Learning Objective:

1. Participants will have a better understanding of what a business model is, and how thinking in terms of a business model holistically can help with problem-solving.

2. Participants will see an approach and some ideas/tools to help work through the uncertainty that comes with trying to launch a new product/initiative or to help an organization navigate through a transformation journey
